Kaizu Shishi Koma Mai Dance (prefecturally designated intangible folk cultural properties) 貝津の獅子こま舞(県指定無形民俗文化財)

A shishi (lion) dance passed down in Kaizu in Miiraku

This has been passed on for many years as Kaizu Shrine’s Shishi Koma Mai dance, one of the events of the New Year. Each household in Kaizu performs this dance as a ritual to keep evil away. There are three roles: Sarutahiko (a god from Japanese mythology), who wears a tengu mask, a male shishi, and a female shishi, and they dance to the sounds of taiko drums and a flute.
