Hexagonal Well 六角井

An unusual six-sided well

It is said that this well was built in 1540 by visitors from Ming China, so they could obtain drinking water and water for their ships when they visited Goto for trade.
The well is characterized by its hexagonal frame and surrounding flagstones. Flagstones were also used inside the well, right up to the water level, creating a form that resembles a hexagon sunk into the ground. This is an important remnant of the age of Japanese piracy on the Goto Archipelago.
There are three wells of this shape in Nagasaki Prefecture (Goto, Hirado, Unzen), and all of them are located in port towns where trade took place with Tang ships.
