Daihogo no Zunauchi (sand throwing) (nationally selected intangible folk cultural properties) 大宝郷の砂打ち(国選択無形民俗文化財)

This festival prays for sound health, an abundant harvest, and a good catch

This is the fall festival of the shrine to the Japanese god Kotoshironushi in Daihoji Temple, during which people pray for sound health, an abundant harvest, and a good catch. The festival consists of a kagura dance and sand-throwing (around the villages). A line of people including the Shinto priest, sand demons (sunaoni), and people in shishi masks make their way around the area while acting out farmwork, and scatter sand throughout the villages. The act of throwing sand is carried out by young people known as sand demons (sunaoni), who smear mud on their faces, hands, and feet and wear "sandora" on their heads (straw woven into a flat, disk-like shape). When they start throwing sand at the spectators and houses, the streets become lively with onlookers and children running away from the sand demons.
