Omonde (nationally selected intangible folk cultural properties) オーモンデー(国選択無形民俗文化財)

A Buddhist prayer dance passed down on Sagano Island

This is a Buddhist prayer dance said to have come from mainland China at the end of the Tang dynasty (618–907). It is handed down by local youths. It is performed by 10–12 dancers and two people striking two gongs; the dancers move in a circle in time with the sounds of the gongs and chanting. This performance is characterized by melancholic singing similar to the yodeling of shepherds in the Alps, clothing like that of the tropics, and arm movements in the style of central Asia. It is performed for the first obon festival after a death in each house, in cemeteries, and on Senjojjiki, a wave-cut platform on Sagano Island.
