Shochu, wine, and gin made in Goto
There are three production sites that make shochu, wine, and gin from local ingredients and the delicious water of Goto City. These great drinks are possible thanks to the rich natural environment of Goto. This article introduces the alcohols made at each of these sites, as well as information on where you can drink and purchase it on the islands, and the products that are a good match for these drinks. Goto Retto Shuzo
This distillery’s shochu is made entirely from ingredients produced on the Goto Islands. There are two types: Goto Imo and Goto Mugi. These alcohols are made with passion by the people of the islands using sweet potatoes, two-row barley, and an abundance of water from the Goto archipelago.
There are also other products to keep in mind: their limited edition imo shochu “beniharuka,” which is made using sweet potatoes with a high sugar content; “Goto Imo 40,” which really brings out the mellow taste of sweet potato; and “Goto no Tsubaki (barley shochu),” made with camellia yeast. The spotlight has recently been on their assorted set of 180 ml bottles, which enables you to enjoy Goto Retto Shuzo’s shochu a bit at a time. With options for three or five cute bottles, these are particularly popular among women, and bring delight as souvenirs.
There is a tasting area inside the distillery, so why not try your favorite drinks to compare them? There are also souvenirs to give to your family and friends, as well as for yourself.
Goto cuisine that goes well with Goto Retto Shuzo’s shochu, as recommended by master distiller Tomokazu Tanigawa
Kue-nabe hotpot goes well with horse mackerel fried fishballs and an imo shochu oyuwari (shochu mixed with hot water).
Dishes made with fresh Goto seafood are a good complement to shochu.

Goto Winery
This winery stands in the vast grounds of Goto Con-Kana Kingdom at the foot of Mt. Onidake, surrounded by nature. They offer a full selection of wines, made entirely from grapes grown in Goto, with reds, whites, rose, and sparkling.
The winery’s Niagara 2022 (white) and Sparkling Wine Niagara 2022 (white), with their citrus flavors and sharp taste, won gold awards in the “SAKURA” Japan Women’s Wine Awards 2023, chosen by women working professionally in the wine industry in Japan. These exhilarating and refreshing wines go well with any dish. Their Campbell Early (rose), a wine and sparkling wine made with Goto-grown grapes and camellia yeast, is also popular among women.
If you make reservations in advance, you can tour the winery and taste some wines.
Their shop also sells specialty products from the islands, so why not buy some souvenirs too?

Goto Tsubaki Distillery
Goto Tsubaki Distillery is located in a small village called Hantomari. They distill each of their 17 botanicals independently, including the island’s native camellias (tsubaki), and their carefully made GOTOGIN the origin has attracted attention in Japan and overseas—it is so popular that production cannot keep up.
Their GOTOGIN Sora yo Kumo Yo series is also popular. These are collaboration products, created by a blender based on the landscape of Goto as depicted by the late Goto-born animated film creator and artist Nizo Yamamoto. Goto Tsubaki Distillery creates aromatic craft gins in a small village in a small cove on the island, and delivers them to Japan and overseas. The spotlight is on them as people wonder what kind of craft gin they will create next.

Add wasabi and eat like sashimi.
