A stunning view! Osezaki Lighthouse
Osezaki Lighthouse is a definite must-visit.
It’s also known as a location for movies and dramas in Japan. From the viewpoint on Cape Osezaki, you can see the horizon, and the peninsula and lighthouse jutting out as if they are extensions of this. Forget everything for a moment as you look out at the wonderful contrast between the blue sea and the white lighthouse.
Have a look at the lighthouse as seen from the sea in pictures taken from the sky.
Goddess statue looking at the lighthouse and sea
Inside the area of the Osezaki Cape viewpoint, you’ll find a path leading to Mt. Oseyama from the carpark at the start of the walkway. This path will take you to the peak of the mountain. It’s a bit of a steep climb, but a statue of a praying goddess and a bell welcome you to this point with spectacular views of the endless East China Sea. The bell next to the goddess statue is secretly said to grant wishes. You can also see Oriental honey buzzards (large migratory raptors) passing by each year in around September and October.
Arakawa Onsen footbath, relieving the fatigue of your travels
A 30-minute drive from Osezaki Lighthouse will take you to Arakawa Onsen hot springs. Here, there is a footbath with seating for around 10 people in an undercover bus waiting area. The footbath can be used free of charge and there are also toilets here, so we recommend this as a rest point.
Gyogasaki Park: Enjoy seasonal flowers and great views of the sea
Gyogasaki Park lies in the north of the island, another 30 minutes or so by car from Arakawa Onsen.
This cape is famous as a port stop of the ships carrying envoys to Tang China. You can enjoy marvelous flower fields here through the year—canola in the spring, hydrangeas in the early summer, sunflowers in high summer, and cosmos in the fall.
This park is a place of comfort at all times, with its beautiful flowers and sky during the day, the evening sun sinking into the horizon, and a star-filled night sky.
Dondon Buchi
If you travel a further 10 minutes by car from Gyogasaki Park and walk from the car park, you’ll hear the sound of water echoing around the mountain like the beat of a drum. This is a spot that is cool in the summer, where you can enjoy splashing around and immersing yourself in the forest. You may also see Genji fireflies here in June.
*The path here is not maintained, so make sure you have appropriate footwear.
